The Ruin Between Us — The Exo-Archaeologist Book 1 by Selene Varr

The way down is the way through. We built not for those who take, but for those who stay. Place your hands where ours once rested. Be patient. We have been waiting a very long time.

Inscription recovered from the Central Chamber of the Meridian Spiral, translated by Dr. Elara Vasquez, 2387 CE

About the Book

She bet everything on a dead man's coordinates. He was sent to steal what she found.

Exo-archaeologist Elara Vasquez is brilliant, broke, and blacklisted. When a reclusive collector's estate goes to auction, she empties her last credits on a set of unverified coordinates—the location of a ruin site that could prove the theory her mentor stole and her career died for. There's just one problem: a charming, infuriating stranger bought the access codes. Neither can proceed alone.

Hadrian Voss is a black-market operative who reads people the way Elara reads ancient civilizations—with surgical precision and zero sentiment. His employer, the shadowy Collector, wants whatever the ruins contain. Hadrian's job is simple: get close, get the data, get out. He's never failed a contract. He's never wanted to.

Stranded together on a tidally locked world bathed in eternal twilight, forced into a joint excavation by colonial authorities, they discover ruins unlike anything in the record—ancient architecture that responds not to force but to intent, built by a civilization that vanished before humanity left Earth. As they spiral deeper, their hostile partnership becomes something far more dangerous: genuine trust. Late nights over ancient consoles. Arguments that turn into breakthroughs. An attraction neither can afford.

Then Elara intercepts his transmissions. Every discovery. Every breakthrough. Every moment she let her guard down—reported. And the Collector's extraction team is already on its way.

With a galactic map blazing to life and enemies closing in, Elara must decide what she's willing to lose—and Hadrian must choose between the life he's built and the woman who made him want to tear it down.

The Ruin Between Us is a closed-door sci-fi romance with enemies-to-lovers tension, forced proximity on an alien world, and a slow-burn romance threaded through ancient ruins and impossible discoveries. First in a series of interconnected standalones. Book 2, Still Burning, coming soon.

Perfect for fans of Jessie Mihalik, Anna Hackett, and Veronica Scott.

“One Lot Circled”

The notification blinked in the corner of my screen. I'd been ignoring it for two days, the way you ignore a loose tooth. Aware of it constantly, unable to stop probing it, unwilling to commit to the yank.

The auction catalogue from Kovac's. An estate sale, which in Circuit parlance meant someone had died and their collection was being parceled out to the highest bidder. The someone, in this case, had been Desmond Yuen, a reclusive Collector who'd spent thirty years acquiring artifacts from pre-galactic ruin sites across the frontier.

I saved the data, tagged it with the client's reference number, and queued the transmission. Fourteen hours of orbital mapping. Payment: enough to cover fuel to the next system and maybe, if I ate the emergency rations instead of actual food, a part for the port-side stabilizer that had been grinding since Kepler Station.

I pulled up my account balance. Watched the payment clear. Did the math I'd been doing every cycle for three years: fuel, docking fees, food, the stabilizer part, the water recycler filter that was six weeks overdue. The numbers never added up.

Still Burning

The map burned in Elara Vasquez's memory like a star chart etched behind her eyelids. One hundred and twelve coordinates. One hundred and twelve Builder sites scattered across the galaxy, each one a piece of a civilization that had been dead longer than humanity had been alive.

About Selene Varr

Selene Varr writes science fiction romance for readers who want their love stories tangled with starlight and ancient mysteries. When not writing, she can be found reading speculative fiction in places she definitely shouldn't, and finding excuses to visit ruins that have absolutely nothing to do with her current project.

The Exo-Archaeologist series is her debut.

For everyone who has ever stared at ruins and heard them speaking.

And for the ones stubborn enough to answer back.
